Where is the Heritage Corridor?
The Heritage Corridor Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) encompasses the communities and counties along the historic 97-mile Illinois and Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor. The Heritage Corridor spans from the Chicago Portage Area just southwest of Chicago to LaSalle-Peru including the counties of Will, Grundy, LaSalle and Putnam. The region conveniently located along I-55 from Chicago to Joliet along I-80 west to LaSalle-Peru.

Old Joliet Prison Releases 2019 Tour Schedule and Pricing

The Joliet Area Historical Museum has released the tour schedule and pricing for the 2019 calendar year. 

Pricing:

  • General Public $20
  • Joliet Resident $15
  • Museum Member $15
  • Combo Prison/Museum Ticket $25
  • Group prices available by special request for groups of 10 or more

General Public Tours:

  • Saturdays 11 am and 2 pm (March through October)
  • Sundays 1 pm (March through October)
  • Thursdays 11 am and 2 pm (April through October)
  • Tuesdays 11 am and 2 pm (June through August)
  • Group tours and photography tours by special request

Each tour is a 90 minute outdoor standing/walking tour of the Internal Prison Yard with some access to buildings. All guests should be expecting to arrive 15 minutes ahead of the designated tour time in order to properly sign in and enjoy the 90 minute tour. All participants on the tours are required to sign a waiver of liability/hold harmless agreement prior to departing on the tour. Without signing this waiver, entrance is not permitted to any guest. Due to the location and the state of the current yard, closed toed shoes are recommended to protect every guests' feet. With the tour being a 90 minute walking tour it is a requirement guests dress in weather appropriate clothing for the heat or the cold of fall. At this time, tour are not ADA approved. However, 70% of the tour is accessible for all patrons.

Each tour is led by a trained docent who will guide the tour throughout the comprehensive history of the Prison. During the tour you will see parts of select buildings on site, with more opening up as time continues you. There is no air conditioning or plumbing on the site but a small water bottle will be provided for all guests and Port-A-Johns are available.
